R&B influenced Drax Project (a mashup of “drums” and “saxophone”) drew worldwide attention when their first single ‘Woke Up Late’ lit up dance floors in 2017. A remix of the track with American singer Hailee Steinfeld saw the band’s popularity soar in 2019. They become bona fide stadium fillers, with European support slots for Christina Aguilera and Camila Cabello, and amassed over 100 million hits on Spotify. Drax Project began in 2013 as a busking act when jazz students Shaan Singh (horn and vocals), drummer Matt Beachen, bassist Sam Thomson and guitarist Ben O’Leary attracted crowds playing covers in Wellington.
